Why is a child's rocking chair so memorable and desired to be kept by millions of adults? Some people keep them as an heirloom to hand down to their kids and grand kids for generations to come. I currently have my daughter's decorated chair up in our attic, which was a special gift from her Nana, so that she someday can hand it down to her children. When I go to visit my grandma, I always sit in the old wooden rocking chair that was handed down to her from her grandparents, which was built in the mid 1800s. It is so interesting why these simple chairs become such a cultural icon for many different ethnicity groups. I believe it has to do with sentimental feeling, wistfulness, and the childhood motion syndrome.
There has always been something special about sitting on a front porch or inside a living room rocking away the hours with other loved ones. On the occasions that I get to rock with my grandma, I somehow enjoy the many hours of quality time as I rock back and forth listening to the stories of old. Giving a gift like a child's rocking chair allows people to hand down a family heritage of sentimental feeling. People can remember special times as they watch their children and grandchildren rock in that old piece of furniture.

There definitely is a wistfulness that accompanies a wooden rocking chair. It is the hope of rocking for hours on end reading a good book and doing nothing that makes the chair such a desired item in the household. They symbolize relaxation and idleness that is often sought for in this busy "rat race" that we call life. Being able to rock is a wistful dream that, I believe, has a part in each one of our lives.
Another reason that these chairs become a part of family culture is what I call the "motion syndrome." We all know that most children love some type of motion. This is why newborn babies fall asleep in the arms of their rocking mother and is also why children of all ages fall fast asleep in a moving vehicle. Being able to relax while rocking back and forth is something we learn from the very first days of our existence. It carries on into our adulthoods and becomes a part of our innate nature within us. I believe that this motion syndrome is what causes us to somehow put a child's rocking chair into the recesses of our minds as an icon of peacefulness.
